R-Value
Cellulose insulation has an average R-value of around 3.5 per inch of thickness. That’s about the same R-value as fiberglass even though blow-in insulation made of cellulose is generally cheaper. Recycled Materials
Cellulose insulation is generally made of up to 85 percent recycled content by weight. The rest comes from nontoxic borate compounds that resist fire, insects, and mold. Nu-Wool is 86 percent recycled content, with 65 percent of that coming from post-consumer recycled newspaper. One study from 2015 states that if all new homes are insulated with blow-in cellulose insulation, it would keep 3.2 million tons of newspapers out of landfills every year. Insulating one home of 1,500 square feet recycles as much newspaper as one person reads in 40 years.
Carbon Footprint

Fire Resistance
Cellulose insulation resists fires more readily compared to other types because it is so densely packed. When filled in correctly, cellulose fill has fewer pockets of air that could lead to the spread of fire. Nu-Wool, the primary type of blow-in insulation we use at Valley Insulation, comes with a Class 1 fire rating. It increases the fire resistance of wall cavities anywhere from 22 to 55 percent.
